Software

The department has a license to distribute Microsoft operating systems and development tools to its students for educational purposes; see Prof. Hummel for checkout of CDs.

SSH-based Utilities

• PuTTY telnet for Windows-based PCs:
  • click here to download putty.exe
  • install putty.exe anywhere you want
  • to run, double-click on putty.exe, select SSH, enter hostname, and click open.
  • to create a short-cut to say math.lfc.edu:
    • install your putty.exe somewhere (say C:\Bin)
    • right-click on putty.exe, create short-cut
    • right-click on short-cut, select properties
    • under Target, add -ssh -h math.lfc.edu
    • Example: "C:\Bin\putty.exe" -ssh -h math.lfc.edu
• Telnet software for the Mac:
  • Mac OS X: use built-in Terminal program
    • specify both machine and login name
    • note that you need to use SSH2 protocol
  • Mac OS 9: Nifty Telnet is available here...
  
  
• WinSCP SFTP for Windows-based PCs:
  • click here to download setup program
  • double-click setup program to install WinSCP
  • accept all the defaults as you go...
  
  
• FileZilla SFTP for Windows-based PCs:
  • click here to download setup program
  • double-click setup program to install FileZilla
  • to configure:
    • startup FileZilla via Start menu
    • Under File menu, select "Site Manager"
    • Click "new site", name it "math.lfc.edu"
    • In host box type "math.lfc.edu"
    • From drop-down list select "SFTP using SSH 2"
    • Click normal button, and enter username in text box
    • Click "Save and Exit".
  • to use:
    • File menu, site manager, select site, connect!
• FuGu SFTP software for Mac:
  • Mac OS X:
    • Fugu for OS 10.3 or later is available here...

• J2SE JDK for Java development (install this first):
  • Windows: setup program (50MB)
  • Other platforms: you want most recent JDK (J2SE 5.0?) from here...

  • You must have administrator rights to proceed... (you should have admin rights on our own PC by default)
