Departmental information
The Lake Forest College Math/CS Department offers both majors and minors
in the study of mathematics and/or the study of computer science. A listing
of the courses is available here. Information
regarding requirements for the major/minor in each field is available here.
The department has a lab of twenty Power Macintosh 7100/80AV computers through
an NSF Grant. Mathematica lab notebooks are used in all Calculus I & II classes
as well as some more advanced courses such as Multivariable Calculus,
Differential Equations, and Probability.
The computers have Symantec Think Pascal and Symantec C++ for computer science courses,
and are also fully connected to the internet.
In addition to the main laboratory, the math lounge has three additional Power Macs,
as well as four IBM compatable computers
for those students that wish to program on
PCs. There are also new 7300/180 Power Macs in all of the classrooms. Three of the rooms have
Mitsubishi 35" monitors for use with Macs or PCs so that professors may demonstrate
use of Mathematica or sample programs to the class with ease. The other two
classrooms have overhead projectors which accomplish the same purpose.
Students that have a greater interest in mathematics may join the MAA.
The Lake Forest chapter of the MAA was founded in April of 1995.
