WAUKEGAN NEWS SUN STAFF REPORT—August 8, 2005
Every golfer who is serious about the sport has a round like this one in
him.
The difference between the rest of us and Ed Packel is that the rest
of us have a round like this on a Wednesday afternoon when no one is watching.
In contrast, Packel had his magical round when it really counted and, as a
result, the Lake Forest resident dominated the Lake County Senior Invitational
that was held last weekend at Lake Bluff Golf Club.
Packel plays to a 13 handicap which means he probably should be shooting in
the 86-88 range at Lake Bluff GC.
Instead, he played brilliantly and his round of 4-over-par 76 earned him
first place in both the low gross and low net divisions.
His 76 won his low gross over the field by a stroke and won his $75.
His low net of 63 earned him a one-shot win over Gillian McLaughlin
of Chicago. That win was worth another $105.
The Lake County Senior Invitational was open to all senior golfers who
either live in the county or play out of a course that's located in the county.
